Monkey See, Monkey Do.
Words By ChrisAlexHamil

We all had that one music video growing up that grabbed us. Being snotty & witless little doofuses, we didn't quite get why it did, and frankly it didn't matter. It just did.

Remembering times...much younger than me now, my halcyon days = the 80s. What was it about them that even today so captures the nostalgic corner of our brains (whether we lived within them or not)? The fanny packs, VCRs, Garfield Phones, Coke thinking it was a good idea to fuck around with their recipe, mix-tapes, the videos on MTV. That last one, though. Videos on MTV! We'd wait around all afternoon, hoping they'd play our favourites. What was yours?

I've got a good one. Ready? Take Me Home, Phil Collins. (Remember the album name? I'll give you a few sentences time to think of it) It nails every thing about the 80s. Innocence, curiosity, frightful hair, Phil nails each (fling no shade for his hair, we all wore it that way). Regardless, the video inspired (watch it again, go head!). Blew my mind that he could travel to so many places...4 continents, 7 countries and 14 cities if my calculations are correct (Phil even made one of those stops just down the road in St. Louis, my auld sod).

He even took us with him. (Answer: No Jacket Required) That video imprisoned the imagination (still does) and it inspired this blog's name. I'll share why in a moment, but first, there's a table to set.

When I hear people talk about travel, I oftentimes hear those same people talk about it in terms of self constructed obstacles as to why they can't do it, obstructing themselves. Money, Time, "NOW? Oh there's no way I could do it now, I'll do it later". Most of which are worthless. (Oh wait, you've got kids? How many hippies have you seen with newborns strapped to their backs alongside their backpacks tooling around Europe? No money? Airlines & Airbnbs are as cheap as you want them. No time? Name a weekend over the last two months that couldn't have just as easily been spent exploring somewhere new, did you really need to binge watch Breaking Bad a fifth time?) The future is no place to lay your better days, friend!

Travel doesn't have to be that difficult. Once that truth sinks in, the sun rises upon the realization that the world, too, can be yours. Stop getting in your own way. That's why Take Me Home is so powerful and has provided the name for this blog, No Far Horizons (from its lyrics). It could just as easily be the title of that stirring video that whipped a little me into a hypnotic frenzy, turning flips in the family room. I saw what Phil did and said, "Why not me?" Why not us? There really are no Far Horizons. Phil had none.

And neither should we, my friend-always walk where you like your steps. Which leads me to my favourite question, "Where to, next?" Eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow, we die.

DMB Lyric Count: 5.
